Haitian Proverb of the Week

"Chemen bezwen pa janm long" (The road to need is never long)

This past week has flown by, can't believe it's already been 6 days since I last wrote! The internet at the Toddler House is still down so that does make it quite a bit harder to stay on top of everything internet-related. I think I'll remember this week as 'the week when everyone got sick,' for obvious reasons. Almost everyone seems to have come down with the same 24-hour flu-type illness one day or another, some worse than others. Glad that's over!

This week has been pretty laid-back so far. This past weekend we went to the Baptist Mission in Fermathe near here, they have some shops and a cute restaurant, and a tiny little zoo with one crocodile, one monkey, some peacocks, goats and a ton of rabbits. One of the rabbits was lying down in its cage and looked pretty sick/dying, and when we pointed that out the zookeeper (or whatever he is), he just pulled the bunny out and chucked him onto the ground behind him. I think most Haitians don't exactly have the same sympathies us northerners usually have for animals, but then again maybe we wouldn't either if we had to slaughter our own meat on a regular basis. We also stopped by a little outdoor market, and I got some veggies (which were amazing by the way) as it's hard to get fresh stuff at the big grocery stores. I even managed to use a bit of creole!

Yesterday we also had a surprise Round 2 of the ol' spraying the house for roaches, and having all 100 of the kids up on the balcony for 5 hours. Ahh. At least it spices up the week a bit! The kids were pretty well behaved this time too, very few big crying fits, and no toddlers chucked themselves off of the balcony. So all in all another success!
