Rainy Thursday in Pétionville

Can't believe it's almost the weekend already! I've spent this week getting into the swing of things, and getting to know "my" kids a bit better. Thankfully I can pick out my kids from among the throngs of other kids without a problem now, and can recognize quite a few more (maybe 30 out of the 100?). Some kids have funny personalities or some other recognizable characteristics, which makes things a bit easier. You can't help but know the ones who, for example, grab hold of your legs and drag along behind you every time you wade through the nursery. There's every kind of baby/toddler represented: big ones, small ones, skinny ones, chunky ones, quiet ones, loud ones, smiley/affectionate ones, timid/reserved ones. Some are HIV positive, or are recovering from malnutrition, or have skin irritations or scabies scarring, or some physical disability. But they all have one thing in common: what they want most is to have someone to love them and play with them. How beautiful is that! Besides the very basics of life (food, shelter, medical care), all they need to be happy is some cuddle/play time! Ahh, so simple, I love it.

We also had a birthday party today for all the kids born in september; 7 in all I think. They all got to come up to the balcony and play around for an hour with toys and balloons, and then eat birthday brownies covered in icing, which of course ended up as icing covering babies' faces, arms, clothes and volunteers. Pretty cute :)
